GABS has the processes, personnel and platforms to gather data across all 16 regions of Ghana, covering agricultural, healthcare, political, financial and educational sectors. Data collectors are trained and supervised, with daily quality checks from the field to the final data file.

We work with universities, government agencies, development organisations and businesses. Read more about GABS Research Consult.

Methods

Quantitative and qualitative

Quantitative surveys

Household, enterprise, health-facility and voter surveys, programmed for tablets where required. See survey design and CAPI development.

Qualitative fieldwork

In-depth interviews, key informant interviews (KIIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs), with interview transcription available as part of qualitative work.

How it works

Our fieldwork process

  1. Plan

Agree the study scope, regions, methods and sample with you.

  2. Prepare the instrument

Finalise the questionnaire or interview guide, and programme it for Android tablets where CAPI is used.

  3. Recruit and train

Train enumerators to administer the questionnaire on tablets, and prepare interviewers for qualitative work.

  4. Collect

Supervised teams collect data across the agreed regions, coordinated by GABS.

  5. Check quality

Data files are synchronised daily to a central server so the team can review them while fieldwork continues.

  6. Hand over data

Data files are prepared and handed over to you; the format is agreed with you.

Standards

Quality and responsible data handling

Quality monitoring

GABS monitors field enumerators remotely, reviews data files each day and gives feedback to teams, so anomalies and invalid responses can be addressed while the survey is live.

Responsible data handling

Participants give consent, only data necessary for the study is collected, and access to personal data is limited to authorised personnel. Participants may opt out. Details are in our data protection policy and code of conduct.
